Coffee Story:

Guatemala Maya Ixil is grown in the mountainous tropical El Quiche region, of Northern Guatemala. The Maya Ixil Cooperative is composed of 185 farmers from the communities of San Juan Cotzal, San Gasper Chajul and Santa Maria Nebaj, and are responsible for this exquisite coffee. In 1998, the Maya Ixil Cooperative formed out of a response to extremely low coffee prices and a need to help farmers increase profits while improving their livelihoods and communities. Soon after Maya Ixil gained organic certification, and in 2004, Maya Ixil became Fair Trade certified, furthering their mission of improving and protecting their environment through the implementation of sustainable practices.

Through the premiums received from organic and Fair Trade certification, the cooperative supports many social and educational projects in their community. Technical assistance workshops are offered to farmers on farm management and pest control. A Women’s Microcredit Fund has been established, empowering wives of farmers to engage in economic possibilities while becoming active in income diversification for their family. This fund has included materials for raising livestock, handicrafts and textiles. And lastly but just as important, a Beekeeping Teaching Program. Bees are so important to all of us living on this planet for pollination of our food supply and environmental health. The honey produced provides nutrition and a supplemental income for these families. Guatemala Maya Ixil directly supports sustainable programs, community and our planet. Let’s drink to that!
