Cup Of Excellence

Cup of Excellence® coffees are exemplary coffees from the world's greatest coffee regions. Annual competitions are held to select the best of the harvest. Winners of these rigorous competitions are awarded the prestigious Cup of Excellence® and are made available via worldwide auctions. When you buy Cup of Excellence coffee you actively support small farmers -- you know who they are, where they live and work, and that they're receiving a premium price for growing award-winning coffee. Montana Coffee Traders is extremely fortunate to be able to offer these rare coffees from this year's harvest. These outstanding coffee are available in limited supply.

COE El Salvador Finca Suiza 07

For over 50 years the Menendez family of El Salvador have been growing great coffee on their farm, Finca Suiza, in the Northwest region of the country. Abundant rainfall, high elevation, volcanic soil and careful attention to detail secured Suiza coffee a 2nd place finish in this years Cup of Excellence competition and the prestigious Presidential award with a score of 92.13. The coffee selected for the competition was harvested from the highest part of the farm over a month’s time and the cherry was hand sorted twice to assure only ripe cherry was used and submitted for competition. This attention resulted in a coffee with full, rich sweetness and a bright clean finish. The creamy, vanilla body of the coffee contributes to the smooth cup and the long lingering finish. $17.25/12 oz. bag. $49.60/3lb bag.

COE Guatemalen San Jose Ocana 07

The farm, San Jose Ocaña, is unique to the Cup of Excellence coffees in several ways. It is probably the oldest farm to win in competition (founded in 1623) and it is certainly one of the highest grown coffees at 6200 feet elevation. The owner, Roberto Sanchez, is the 5th generation to work the farm. This history, experience and location contribute to the production of a classically wonderful coffee. The coffees of Guatemala have a reputation of elegance and flavor that are clearly pronounced in the coffee from San Jose Ocaña. Some of the descriptions from the International Jury that gave this coffee a score of 91.50 were sweet, intense fruit acidity, abundant fruits, chocolate, creamy and very fragrant with hints of jasmine. This Presidential award winner placed 2nd in the Cup of Excellence competition. Considering the fine reputation and history of outstanding coffees from Guatemala this is a rare find and stellar opportunity to taste the best of the best. $15.75/12 oz. bag. $44.80/3lb bag.

COE Honduras El Filo 07

Miguel Moreno Leiva carefully processes his award winning coffee on his family farm El Filo in the Santa Barbara region of Honduras. The coffee is shade grown and the farm hosts many varieties of shade trees creating a diversity of habitat for native birds and insects. The soil in the farm is aided by Mr. Moreno's biocomposting compost waste using California earthworms. Careful harvesting of the ripe, red coffee cherries and using pure clean water in the wet processing has reaped rewards for Miguel in his outstanding coffee. El Filo placed 4th in this years Cup of Excellence competition with a Presidential Award winning score of 90.59. The coffee grows at 5000 feet in elevation and is the Paca variety of Arabica coffee. Big body, honey sweetness and a background of citrusy acidity qualifies this coffee as one of the finest we've seen this year. $14.50/12 oz. bag. $40.80/3lb bag.

COE Nicaraguan Santa Isabel 07

This year he captured 5th place and the prestigious Presidential award for his score of 90.55 given by the International cupping jury. Numbers alone do not tell the story of this sweet, sweet coffee. The delicate citric acidity compliments a mellow chocolate flavor and round velvety body. The long lingering sweet aftertaste is the result of selective harvesting of the ripe red coffee cherries and the perfect combination of time and temperature in the final drying process. $15.75/12 oz. bag. $44.80/3lb bag.
